Black Bear Hunting the Upper Peninsula in Michigan

The hunting method we use for black bear is baited stands (both tree stands and ground blinds) during the afternoon/evening periods. Each hunter has at least two bait location choices with other baits available if bait becomes inactive. Our bear baits are monitored with infrared game cameras to check size of bear and time of feeding activity. The baits are located 25-40 yards from the tree stand or ground blind. Because of most shots coming at short ranges each hunter should be very scent and movement conscious. Black bear have a very keen sense of smell so high rubber boots and scent-free clothing is encouraged.

Past hunter success has been very good as we have been running 100% on bear sighting for each hunter and approximately 50% on bear kills depending upon hunter choice of bear size he is willing to harvest. Because of excellent habitat, low hunting pressure, almost no dog hunting and great food sources, many of our bears are in the 400# class with an occasional 500# animal. Last year three of the top five largest bear in Michigan were taken in the Carney Bear Management area.

We offer three 5-day hunt periods beginning September 10-14, September 15-19, and September 20-24. We only book a maximum of four bear hunters during any one period so as to not over-hunt an area or hunt period. Choice of weapon is up to the hunter (handgun, shotgun, rifle or archery.) Firearms must be minimum 270 caliber and fixed broadheads are required on archery.

Feel free to bring your own ATV so as to add to your personal hunting enjoyment.
